LURIK
a short story on one of the oldest textiles of the world
An ancestral story, passed down from the 9th Century, to the 21st.
The story of Lurik - our textile icon of Volume 1 - began in the island of Java, in 851 AD Mataram Kingdom. Told through written inscriptions and carved onto statues, the Lurik textile was championed by the people for its performance, simplicity & durability.
A Practice Rooted in Nature
For artisans of Lurik, weaving is inseparable from the rhythm of nature. Guided by Kejawen (ancient Java's religion) philosophy, they live in harmony with the land, being farmers and weavers at once. Each act nourishing the other. Planting and harvesting with the same hands that spin and weave...blurring the line between earth and cloth, nature and creation.
From 850AD, with Love...
The first record of LURIK was found in inscriptions from the 9th Century Mataram kingdom, and it has been woven by hand for generations since.
Where Batik was reserved for royalty and the upper classes, lurik emerged from the everyday life of the people...the workers and artisans who wove their own clothes using simple looms and natural dyes.
Worn by farmers, labourers and soldiers - lurik was made for performance, keeping you warm when it's cool and cool when it's warm. It was born from necessity, but made with wisdom.
WHICH LURIK MATCHES YOUR VIBE?
Each stripe of the Lurik textile carry meaning. Every line woven represent protection or gates, that guard you. To wear lurik was to be shielded from harm. And so it became the uniform of palace soldiers, servants, and ordinary people alike...a quiet symbol of resilience, humility, and strength. Find one that truly represents you.

Today, We Re-imagine Lurik
We celebrate the fabric once tied to class and function as a symbol of timeless simplicity. Its minimalist stripes may be modern but hold within them the stories of those who wove for protection, hope, and belonging.
Pedasss Atelier honours this lineage. We transform Lurik from its humble origins into artisan-made clothing for a new generation — thoughtful, sustainable, and deeply human.
