BATIK
across indonesia, every region tells its own story through batik.
A Story of Indonesia, Told Through Batik
Across the country, every region, village, city tells its story through this ancient art of textile making. From the royal courts of Yogyakarta where the designs once signalled rank and destiny, to the bustling coastal ports of Cirebon, alive with trade and cultural exchange. Each design carry meaning, history and intention, across centuries.
Batik is the Art of Mindfulness
"Batik' is the definition of slow fashion. Split over multiple stages - from drawing the motif by hand to dyeing the cloth colour by colour - it is a discipline of patience, intention and artistry. One intricate motif on a 2 meter cloth can take an artisan up to a year to complete.
UNESCO Masterpiece
Batik is the technique of 'wax resist dyeing' that originated from the island of Java, Indonesia and now practiced across the world...from Europe or Africa. It is part of the Javanese ancient tradition and UNESCO's Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
There are two ways to make Batik - the traditional hand drawn or using a carved wooden stamp, the latter created to fulfil demand for larger Batik quantities, that began during the colonial era.
Our Batik Collection
In batik making, hot wax is carefully applied to parts of a fabric. The designs are drawn by hand with wax, dyed one colour at a time, boiled, washed and dried - ready for the process to repeat again. Each piece in our collection took up to 6 months to create.

Our Batik Collection is Hand Drawn
Using a technique known as "Batik Tulis" which literally translates to "Hand written Batik". It is the oldest and most traditional way of creating batik, and uses a pen-like tool called CANTING dipped in hot wax. The artisan will use this to draw each motif by hand, guiding molten wax across the cloth with patience and delicate precision. We can confirm it is SO much harder than it looks. The process is meditative, time consuming and incredibly special. No two pieces will ever be the same.

MEGAMENDUNG
SHOP MEGAMENDUNG"For the grounded souls, the patient mentors, for everyone who leads with heart. This motif was created for leadership, wisdom, and grace under pressure."
"Megamendung" is one of the oldest and most iconic Batik motifs in the world. Originating in Cirebon, West Java, it was a design reserved for Kings. Today, it can be worn by everyone.
Inspired by Taoism, defined by its iconic gradations of colour that form clouds, illustrating a broad, limitless sky. It invites the wearer to move through life with the calm, measured grace of clouds drifting across the sky.

BATIK FLORAL
SHOP BATIK TULIS"For those who crave slow mornings and wild nights, for the romantic, the seductress, those who turn heartbreak into poetry and the ones who make every moment cinematic."
Floral batik patterns symbolise beauty, growth, love, and harmony with nature. Specific flowers carry deeper meanings, like the lotus for purity...as such these floral motifs are rich in cultural and spiritual significance. They are often used in ceremonies.
Ours are made using the traditional "Batik Tulis" technique. Every line drawn, every layer of colour added... is a labour of patience, care and devotion.
Re-imagining Batik
Batik is more than fabric, it's a living narrative. It tells stories of empires and villages, ceremonies and daily life, love and legacy - it is a tapestry of Indonesia's spirit. In wearing it, we carry a fragment of this heritage. We have interpreted Batik as scarves and sarong skirts inspired by the traditional way of wearing Batik, into pieces made for contemporary life.

A note from the Founder
"Batik was the textile that started it all. Burnt out after multiple failures and totally uninspired, I booked my flight home...from Rio to Indonesia. This is where I discovered Batik Seno, a Batik textile studio whose teachers welcomed me with open arms, knowledge and wisdom. There, I spent weeks making my first Batik pieces (including a Naruto piece...IYKYK) and not only did I fall in love with the process, I was inspired by its history & cultural significance. It was the catalyst for researching more of Indonesia's textile heritage and planted the seed from which Pedasss Atelier was born."
